If You Cannot Serve, You Cannot Lead!

When Jesus implied the principle that “If you cannot serve, you cannot lead,” he was introducing a radical concept known as servant leadership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In the ancient world (and much of the world today), leadership was defined by power, status, and authority over others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Jesus completely flipped this paradigm, teaching that true greatness in the Kingdom of God is measured by a person’s willingness to serve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
While the exact phrase “If you cannot serve, you cannot lead” is a modern summary rather than a direct quote, it perfectly captures Jesus’s teachings in the Gospels:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Matthew 20:26-28: “Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be your slave\u2014just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Washing of the Feet (John 13:14-15): During the Last Supper, Jesus (the Master) got down on his knees and washed the feet of his disciples (the followers)\u2014a job reserved for the lowest household servants. He then told them, “Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another\u2019s feet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Authority is Found in Humility: A leader must not view themselves as above the people they guide. If a person is too proud to perform basic tasks or care for the practical needs of others, they lack the humility required to guide people wisely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Empathy and Understanding: You cannot effectively lead people if you do not understand their struggles. By serving alongside or beneath others, a leader gains the empathy needed to make decisions that actually benefit the group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Leading by Example, Not Force: True leadership inspires people to follow out of respect and love, not fear or obligation. Jesus demonstrated that a leader earns the right to be heard by first showing deep care for the followers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Purpose Over Ego: A true leader focuses on the mission and the well-being of the team, not personal accolades, titles, or power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In short, it means that the ultimate test of a leader’s character is their willingness to serve. If leadership is only about being in charge, it becomes tyranny; if it is rooted in service, it becomes true leadership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Let\u2019s look at two disciples of Jesus requested a place of prominence in Jesus\u2019 kingdom, Jesus instructed the disciples on the true meaning of leadership\u2014not \u201clord-leadership,\u201d but servant leadership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Then James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came to him. \u201cTeacher,\u201d they said, \u201cwe want you to do for us whatever we ask.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
They replied, \u201cLet one of us sit at your right and the other at your left in your glory. \u2026 \u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Jesus called them together and said, \u201cYou know that those who are regarded as rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
So, You May Ask, \u201d Why Am I Serving?\u201d
\u201cHow do my actions prevent me from servant leadership?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Often we announce a destination: \u201cHere\u2019s a vision; here\u2019s what I want to do.\u201d Then we use a delegating leadership style and don\u2019t roll up our sleeves and get in there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That\u2019s what managing the journey is. Sure, it\u2019s coming up with the vision and the direction, but then the vision must be implemented: coaching, supporting, giving directions, praising progress, and redirecting. Jesus did this well. I<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Jesus wandered from one little town to another, and people would say, \u201cHow do you become first?\u201d Jesus said, \u201cBy being last.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
People would ask him, \u201cHow do you lead?\u201d \u201cBy following.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Managing the journey of change is servant leadership. We must get our own personal accomplishments out of the way and praise, redirect, reprimand-anything it takes to help people win.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
